BRAVE: “Change your fate.”

The picture you see here is the teaser movie poster art for Brave, Disney-Pixar’s upcoming animated feature film. According to the official site, the movie is set to premiere on June 22^nd, 2012. I can’t wait! The official story description reads:

“Since ancient times, stories of epic battles and mystical legends have been passed through the generations across the rugged and mysterious Highlands of Scotland. In ‘Brave,’ a new tale joins the lore when the courageous Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald) confronts tradition, destiny, and the fiercest of beasts. Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of the land: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson), and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the kingdom, and when she turns to an eccentric old Witch (voice of Julie Walters) for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.”

Basically, this movie seems like a combination of all my favorite things. Ancient times, epic battles, mystical legends, awesome female protagonist, and Kelly Macdonald’s lovely accent. Yes, please. Plus, Emma Thompson! (I think that makes at least four Harry Potter actors. Love.) Check out the exciting trailer below, so you can join me in my geeky anticipation:

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING: Joss does Shakespeare

This is old news to most of you, but I haven’t had a chance to geek out about it yet, so here goes. Apparently, Joss Whedon decided to spend his post-Avengers-filming vacation making a movie with his wife, Kai Cole. And not just any movie, but the Shakespeare comedy Much Ado about Nothing, shot in black and white. And that’s not all. Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof play the central couple in the piece, Beatrice and Benedick. Bestill my Fred and Wes loving heart! I mean, Winifred Burkle and Wesley Wyndam-Price are my favorite television couple EVER (I am not kidding), so this just fills me with so much joy. And not only do Denisof and Acker get to be reunited in a project, they get to be snarky and witty and IN LOVE. I mean, seriously? Thank you, Joss. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Additional Whedonverse actors populate the upcoming film too: Nathan Fillion, Sean Maher, Tom Lenk, Fran Kranz, and Reed Diamond. Um, the portrayers of Cap’n Tight Pants, Simon Tam, Andrew Wells, Topher Brink, and Laurence Dominic ALL TOGETHER in one movie? The world is a magical wonderful place. Jeannie returns to the podcast to join me in discussing the final Harry Potter film: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2. This podcast was recorded late Saturday night, July 16th, 2011. (Sorry, but it took me a long time to edit. We talked for a looooong time, so I cut a lot.) In addition to discussing the latest film, we fondly reminisce about our love of the Harry Potter books, and discuss the past films as well. This podcast contains spoilers for the final movie, so beware! Also, if you don’t want to hear people compare the books and movies, or you don’t want to hear opinions that are different from your own, do yourself a favor and sit this one out. We have been Harry Potter fans for 11 years, and feel entitled to air our opinions, thank you very much.

Then at the 1:23:45 mark (83 minutes and 45 seconds in) we discuss The Hunger Games book series. Jeannie just finished reading Mockingjay last week. Once again, there are spoilers, so beware.

With only a month until the final Harry Potter movie, Warner Bros. has released a second trailer for the upcoming film. I have posted it below. I am pretty sure that I will sob through most of the movie. ”The boy who lived, come to die.” Stock up on your tissues now, Potter fans.

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS — First official trailer

I came home today to find that the first trailer for the X-Men prequel, X-Men: First Class, had been posted. And it is AMAZING. I have embedded it here below, for your enjoyment. I’m very excited about the period aspect of it–the Cuban Missile Crisis seems key–and in addition to the Mad Men-esque setting, Betty Draper herself (January Jones) will play Emma Frost. Young Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and young Xavier (James McAvoy) seem perfectly cast, and the tone is suitably dark and intense. Look for the release of the film on June 3rd this year. I already wrote X-MEN in big block letters on that date in my Buffy calendar, AND added it to my Google calendar. If you haven’t done the same, catch-up already.

MILDRED PIERCE: Trailer and teaser for the HBO miniseries

James M. Cain’s 1941 novel, Mildred Pierce, has already provided the basis for a classic film. Joan Crawford played the tough lower middle class single mom to perfection in 1945′s Mildred Pierce, co-starring Ann Blyth (Veda), Jack Carson (Wally), Eve Arden (Ida), and Zachary Scott (Monte). As a fan of both the book and the film, I was very excited to hear that HBO was producing a miniseries based on the story, starring Kate Winslet in the title role. Win, win. Evan Rachel Wood stars as Mildred’s daughter, Veda, and Guy Pearce will recreate the role of the slick and suave Monte Beragon. The five part miniseries is set to premiere in March 2011, so check out the trailer and teaser videos below.

And for a little taste of nostalgia, here’s the trailer for the original film. If you haven’t seen it, rent, buy, or steal it at once. Fun fact: Mildred Pierce was not James M. Cain’s only novel to be translated to the silver screen. He also wrote The Postman Always Rings Twice and Double Indemnity. If you’re into film noir or vintage crime novels, put Cain’s books on your “To Be Read” list immediately.

There is a new trailer out for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I, via Yahoo! Movies. Thanks to @EricIGN for calling attention to it on Twitter. I have posted it below for your enjoyment.

So, what did you think? Voldemort’s nose, or lack thereof, is rather … alarming. And it was fun to see the seven Potters–I’m definitely looking forward to that scene. I’m glad they kept the wedding in, and I hope some of the humor of the wedding preparations will be included. Also, it looks like Dobby made it in. Hurrah! My S.P.E.W. lovin’ heart is gladdened by this. November 19th can’t come soon enough.

Hey, remember when C.S. Lewis’s beloved book series, The Chronicles of Narnia, was going to be made into a film series … but then they only made two movies? Well, a third is finally scheduled for release: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Sci-Fi Talk has posted the trailer:

Looks like we can expect to return to Narnia this year, at Christmas time. Hurrah!
