GILMORE GIRLS Podcast: “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?”
Francesca and I (Lucia) recorded an episode commentary for Gilmore Girls episode 3×07, “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” Otherwise known as “The Dance Marathon Episode,” or “One of My Favorite Episodes of All Time!” We’ve never done an episode commentary before, so please forgive any awkwardness and let us know what you think of the format in the comments, or via email. We prompt you in the podcast when to push play on your DVD, if you want to follow along (but watching the episode while listening is not necessary). The episode originally aired on November 12th, 2002. Ah, memories of long ago. Stars Hollow hosts its 50th annual 24 Hour Dance Marathon. Much drama ensues, along with fabulous hair and clothes. This podcast contains a lot of laughing and personal reminiscences. Plus some Dean vs. Jess discussion; I love Dean, while Francesca swoons over Jess’s “hotness,” so there’s something for everyone. At the very end, there is some brief discussion of The Nine Lives of Chloe King, and our plans for summer podcasting. You can listen on the player below, or subscribe via iTunes.

Cool! A Gilmore Girls podcast! I just want to say, you’re not the only one on the Jess hate train!lol I think I hated him so much because he was SO angry for no apparent reason. I mean, his mom and dad split. So what? There are way worse things in the world! But the one thing that made me mad was how nasty he was to Luke, the one person who could actually stand him! Sorry, I’m stopping now!lol
And I love that episode too! But my absolute favorite is “Rory’s dance” in season 1. It got me totally obsessed. lol
I also loved “Chicken and Beef”, in season 4. That last shot of Rory always makes me cry, when she watches Dean at the church. They really should have left it at that. They totally ruined Dean after that….
Anyway, thanks for the podcast! Gilmore Girls forever!!!
Thanks, Emily! Yeah, his treatment of Luke, and Lorelai, and just everybody in general was what really annoyed me about Jess. A constantly surly, patronizing, and superior attitude is just not attractive to me. I mean, I love that he read books, but I think people forget how badly he treated Rory once they were actually dating. Flaking on her over and over, pressuring her to have sex at that party, and then skipping town without a goodbye. And yes, “Rory’s Dance” is a great episode. There are just so many good ones. Maybe I’ll convince Francesca to record another commentary of that one.
Yes! Do it! I mean, hum… no pressure or anything! And I agree totally 100% about Jess. The only time he was kind of redeemable was when he helped Rory go back to college. But even then he was so patronizing, telling her he knew her better than anybody else. Really, better than Lorelei? Ugh! Logan was kind of okay(okay, not true I hated him but I have kind of forgotten about it since I LOVE him on the Good Wife now!)
Anyway, still no pressure, I mean I would be eternally grateful if you did a podcast on Rory’s Dance but I mean, it’s totally your decision….lol
I hate Jess AND Dean! I always preferred Logan, am I the only one? I love this episode, it’s a shame though that Dave and Lane didn’t get a proper relationship because he had to bugger off to The OC. One of my all time favourites though is “That Damn Donna Reed” from Season 1, even though I don’t like Dean I still think what Rory did for him was really cute and nice.
Haha! No, you’re definitely not the only one. I was never a huge Logan fan, but I know that lots of people were. Like Emily, I think Matt Czuchry is great on The Good Wife. Agreed about Dave and Lane. Sigh.
hee. ok, when francesca said that lorelai kissed max medina in the finale, I freaked for two seconds.
I thought “oh my god they made a special episode in the U.S. and I missed it!!” ( loved max medina, btw)
Jess is insufferable, but I loooove him!

I mean he’s responsible for two of the best scenes of the show:
1. when he was hit by the swan
2. when luke pushed him in the lake.
They both involve Jess being hurt but they’re priceless
and let’s not forget that he’s the one who basically made rory realize that she had to go back to yale, while logan ( that I liked, but not loved ) was just letting her throw her life away – and letting his father insult her and make her feel unworthy. grrrrr.
Keep doing podcasts together, you’re hilarious!
ps: of course Luke and Lorealai are married now, and they’re about to have a baby because Luke really wants a kid ( April DOES NOT EXIST in my imaginary, future Gilmore Girls universe ). Jess is still a writer, Rory is a journalist for the NY Times and they make a beautiful couple. Dean is happy somewhere, and Lane’s mum is the Mayor of Stars Hollow
Haha! Yeah, since Francesca has been doing a rewatch, I think she was thinking of the finale of one of the early seasons. Who knows? Hee. I liked Max at first, but after multiple rounds, I got tired of him quickly. Plus, I don’t think he really got Stars Hollow or Lorelai’s wacky side. He seemed to just humor her. But it’s so funny when I see that actor in anything else, because he’ll always be Max Medina to me. My favorite Max moment is when Lorelai listens to the message that he leaves her over and over … and over again. Adorable.
Yes, Jess being hit by the swan and Luke pushing him in the lake are DEFINITELY two of the best scenes of the show. So much fun! I think I need to rewatch those episodes ASAP.
Yeah, when Jess came back in season 5 (or was it 6), he had really matured. I liked that he knocked sense into Rory (figuratively) and was finally happy. Proof that people can grow up.
