The first time I watched this episode I was to in shock/worried to realize how brilliant all those little moments were. Angel had a talent for that and as you mentioned flowing from serious to wise ass in seconds. The early years are my favorite hands down though I do have soft spots for some of the episodes in later seasons. Cordy really came into her own on Angel but not as much as Wesley. I was heart broken when he replaced Doyle but I really grew to love that rouge hunter
