PRETTY LITTLE LIARS: A Preview

2010 April 24

We are nearing the end of the television season, but as some shows are getting closer to their finales, new summer programming is popping up.  One of these upcoming shows is Pretty Little Liars, which will be airing on ABC Family on Tuesday nights, beginning on June 8th, at 8/7c.  A couple months ago, I posted something about Alexis Denisof being cast in Pretty Little Liars.  Unfortunately, Denisof is no longer attached to the project, but I am still intrigued by the show.  The upcoming television series is based on a book series of the same name, written by Sara Shepard.  You can read more about the books on the official website or check out the description and reviews on Amazon: Pretty Little Liars.  ABC Family provides the following description of the show:

It’s about four former best friends who reunite one year after their friend Alison goes missing. Nice, right? Then they start getting messages from a mysterious “A” who knows all their secrets. Coincidence? Or something sinister? It stars Lucy Hale as Aria, Troian Bellisario as Spencer, Ashley Benson as Hanna, Shay Mitchell as Emily, Laura Leighton, and Nia Peeples. Bianca Lawson from “The Vampire Diaries” is featured in a recurring role. It’s kind of spooky, totally addictive.

Hmmm.  It seems spooky and fun, and totally worthy of guilty pleasure status.  You may remember Lucy Hale as one of the rich sisters from Privileged–she was the nice one–or as the little sister in Bionic Woman. She is the one pictured in the center of the poster art above.  The blond behind her is Ashley Benson, whom I remember as Rebecca Romijn’s daughter on Eastwick, and Abby on Days of Our Lives.  Hale and Benson will be playing two of the central characters, Aria and Hanna.  Holly Marie Combs (Piper from Charmed) and Chad Lowe have been cast as Aria’s parents.  Hanna’s mother will be played by the gorgeous and talented Laura Leighton, of Melrose Place fame.  Oh, Sydney, I hope that you will be causing trouble, as you do best.  And I’m looking forward to seeing Kendra the Vampire Slayer/ Emily the Witch as well.  Will she have any special powers in this show?  The tagline for the show is “Never trust a pretty girl with an ugly secret.”  Despite that nonsense, check out the preview below:

I was wondering if you’d be watching. I’ve been a fan of the books for a while now so I had a very worried opinion when the promos started coming out but I’ve decided to just sit back and see what they do with it. But Alexis is still in the pilot as far as I can tell after which Chad Lowe replaces him. Which is sad because Bryon would have been a great character for him to play.

I’m gonna try to read at least the first book before the show starts, but I don’t know if I’ll have time. But I will definitely be tuning in to the first few episodes and give it a chance. I hope that it’s good!

It’s not really paranormal like they’re making it out to be but more of a mystery with more twists and turns then you can imagine and riddled with information that seems true or relavint at the time but will later prove to be false or irrelavint. Ironicly the 8th and finale book is coming out the same day the show premieres so we’ll see how Sara finally wraps it all up.

Ooh, good to know. Twisty mystery actually sounds way better than paranormal.

Yeah I don’t know where they’re getting paranormal. It’s so hard to talk about the books in anyway in case I accidentally let something cool/spoilery slip but it’s like gossip girl meets,…twin peaks is the best I can come up with but it describes it pretty well.

I found the 1st book on sale on Amazon for $3.50, so I purchased it. Looks like I’ll have a chance to read at least that one before the show starts.
