LIFE UNEXPECTED: Introduction & Video Featurette

2009 November 20

I am very intrigued by an upcoming mid-season offering, Life UneXpected.  It stars Shiri Appleby (Liz from Roswell),  Kristoffer Polaha (recently featured on the Dollhouse episode “Belonging” as the bereaved widower, and also familiar to Mad Men fans as the Drapers’ neighbor, Carlton Hanson), Britt Robertson, Kerr Smith (Jack from Dawson’s Creek), Reggie Austin, and Austin Basis.  The new show premieres Monday, January 18th at 9/8c, on the CWCW TV.com offers the following official description for the new show:

After spending her life bouncing from one foster family to another, 15-year-old Lux has decided to become an emancipated minor. Her journey through the legal maze leads Lux to her biological father, 30-something Nate “Baze” Bazile, who lives like an aging frat-boy and is astonished to learn he has a daughter. Lux is equally astonished to learn that her mother is Cate Cassidy, a star on local radio, along with her boyfriend, Ryan Thomas. When a judge grants temporary custody of Lux to Baze and Cate, they agree to make a belated attempt to give Lux the family she deserves.

Life UneXpected is produced by Mojo Films in association with CBS Television Studios and Warner Bros. Television with executive producers Liz Tigelaar (“Brothers and Sisters,” “What About Brian”) and Gary Fleder (“October Road”). Gary Fleder directed the pilot.

Once, just once, I’d like to watch that clip and not get all teary! Gaaah. This show is going to be amazing. My tissue box and I will be tuning in on Jan 18th!

Yeah, it looks like this show will probably be a tear jerker. I’ve been hearing the buzz about this show for awhile – all good – but yesterday was the first time I actually watched any clip from it. January and February will be filled with so much good TV! Caprica, Lost, Chuck, and now Life UneXpected.

I heard lot of things about this show. All good. I’ve also chatted with someone that has watched the entire pilot. Everyone agrees that is absolutely marvellous. And regardless how tear jerker it seems, people say it’s very, very funny. I’m really intrigue and, obviously I’ll be watching.

The combination of tear jerker and comedy always works well. I always like a balance. I am very excited to see more, and have only heard good things as well.

Gonna have to go against the flow here. I think it looks awful. Looks overly sappy and emotional and with a plot that makes little to no sense. Why would a kid in foster homes her whole life a) have to get signatures from her birth parents in order to be emancipated b) be released into parent’s custody by a judge when they haven’t been there her whole life c) said kid accept the fact that she is now living with negligent, abandoning parentsrather than just run away or whatever which is what the majority of people in this situation would do.

Maybe it’s because I hate sappy things (ala romantic dramas like titanic) but this looks like it’s going to be painfully cheesy, full of “very special” episodes which I just loathe.

I also hate Titanic with a fiery passion, so your criticism is well taken. However, from what I’ve heard about the show it also has a quirky sense of humor, which would prevent it from getting too sappy. It reminds me more of the emotional punch of things like Juno or Glee, rather than a sappy love story like Titanic. I didn’t get that “very special” episode feel from the clip, but I would also hope that it doesn’t develop into that type of cheese-fest. “Very special” episodes are highly annoying. Yes, some of the plot lines definitely seem absurd, but they seem to work with the tone of the show. I haven’t watched the entire pilot yet, though, so I will have to wait and see … but I do like what I’ve seen so far.
