Read on for my thoughts on Mad Men 3×06 (spoilers ahead):

With all the new shows premiering this week, and the start of classes, I wasn’t able to post a recap/ review in a timely fashion.  However, I can’t let last week’s amazing episode go unnoticed by this blog, so here are some quick thoughts on the madness:

  • There were a lot of mix-ups and changes at Sterling Cooper last week.  Let’s start with the lawn mower incident.  I was watching the screen wondering, “Is this really Mad Men?  What is going on here?” … but in an awesome kind of way.  The bloody accident was so unexpected that it just took my breath away.  Kudos to the writers and the production staff for creating such an insane, yet believable, moment.  Shame on the lawn mower victim’s colleagues: “The doctors say he may never golf again.”  Losing a foot means losing your advertising career?  What a crazy mixed up world.
  • On the Joan front, it was a bit disturbing to see this woman, who is the epitome of fabulous, cry.  I felt comforted when she jumped in to save the day after the tractor incident–this is the Joan we know and love.  Joan’s husband continues to make me hate him. I just wanted to scream at my TV during their scenes.  Joan is a saint for putting up with him.  I pretty much saw this coming, as the dinner party episode hinted that Dr. Whatever-his-name-is was a bad surgeon.  There were definitely some pointed comments by the doctors and their wives that foreshadowed this failure to get a promotion.  Additionally, there’s no way Joan would leave the show (at least I hope), so the writers had to figure out a way to keep her at Sterling Cooper.  I hope she’ll end up staying at the ad agency, but if not, then I hope for an exciting job hunt.
  • Don’s interest in moving to London was somewhat surprising, as was Betty’s enthusiasm for the idea.  In the end it was all for naught, as the promotion didn’t happen, but it was a tantalizing idea.
  • Then there was little Sally Draper, who is still trying to cope with the loss of her grandfather.  Her parents continue to be oblivious, particularly Betty.  Betty’s method of parenting is just to scold and ignore.  In the end, however, Don was able to figure out the problem.  Sally has been terrified of her baby brother, because he has her grandpa’s name and room, and felt that he was still there haunting them.  Poor thing.  Don managed to remember he had a responsibility as a parent, and help her come to terms with baby Eugene.

You were right. This episode was not one to miss. Joan was phenomal in this episode from the leg lawner mowing incident that was crazy to just her supportiveness towards her husband. I want to be that woman. The show needs more of her and I hope we can get her back. She adds a balance to MadMen they desparately need.

I know! Don’t we all want to be like Joan? She’s amazing. This week’s episode was certainly missing a certain something–namely, Joan.
