My thoughts on the DOLLHOUSE season 1 premiere

Warning: Do not read if you haven’t watched the Dollhouse season 1 premiere episode, “Ghost”!
First of all, I loved it. It went by so fast, with me loving every moment. Believe the hype, because this show is awesome! Here are my first reactions:
- I loved the music of the opening title sequence, but why were there only pictures of Eliza in the credits? There are so many other awesome actors on the show, so hopefully they will change that. I loved Eliza as Echo/ all her other characters, but I don’t want this to strictly be the Eliza show. More Olivia Williams, Amy Acker, and Tahmoh please.
- Eliza wore the shortest dress ever. Seriously.
- Echo’s handler, Harry Lennix’s character, Boyd (?), really added to the reality of the show for me. I think it was great to have someone concerned with the ethical and moral implications of what is being done to Echo. He clearly is an upstanding guy, so the question is, how did he come to be involved in something as sketchy as the dollhouse? Hmmm. So far, I really trust him, and he provides a great foil for the creepy doctor.
- Speaking of the creepy doctor/ scientist, Topher is an ass. He comes across as a slimy jerk from the beginning, so it will be interesting to see what path his character takes. Will he have redeeming qualities? The one enjoyable aspect of his character is that he brings the funny–but it’s definitely a dark humor.
- Amy Acker! Hurrah for her being back on television! In the press for the show, her character Dr. Claire Saunders has been described as having these awful scars on her face, evidence of a secret and traumatic past; however, the scars weren’t very noticeable. I really had to stretch to see them. We only saw her for a very short time, so I can’t wait to see that character develop further. Again, Amy Acker! Woo hoo!
- Olivia Williams was as awesome as I thought she would be. As the boss of the Dollhouse, she is a perfect blend of sophisticated, scary, and mysterious. I can’t wait to get her back-story.
- I was really glad that the episode opened with Echo’s former self, Caroline, making the decision to join the Dollhouse. We don’t have all the details yet, but it’s clear that Caroline felt she had no alternative. That scene, combined with the shot of Sierra (Dichen Lachman) being subjected to the painful “treatment” for the first time, really ups the ante for the Dollhouse’s creep factor. This stuff is sketchy, it is not a paradise. The tension between fantasy and reality (as evidenced by the 2 very different “engagements”) will be a continuing theme in this show. It’s going to be a crazy ride!
- “Grrr Argh.” Great to see the Mutant Enemy logo again!
- Can’t wait for next week!
